Stock Up! The End Is Near!
by LevelThePlayingField inabout four paragraphs down in the article... source: http://www.westernjournalism.com/stock-up-the-end-is-near-or-so-say-mormons/.
cults quite commonly use made-up prophecy to bolster their membership.
for example, beginning around 1918, the watchtower bible and tract society today commonly known as jehovahs witnesses began teaching that the old testament saintsabraham, isaac, jacob and king david, etc.would all be returning from the dead in 1925!

Oh the humanities...my wicked neighbor!
by username ini have been given a piece of birthday cake as it was his birthday yesterday!
will i be a human hot dog now?.....
this just got me thinking of all the stupidities of the watchtower teachings, someone very kindly offers you something as innocent as a slice of chocolate cake but we were supposed to turn it down because that peace of chocolate cake now had horns poking out the top of the chocolate frosting.

JW's ( and other religions ) have reduced God to this angry old man in the sky waiting for us to do something bad so he can shake his fist in the air in rage or be crestfallen in utter disappointment at our weaknesses or failings or who is watching with rapt attention, our trivial comings and goings. (think of the sad Jehovah routine in the Caleb and Sophia videos)
Those old notions from childhood that were intended to mold us to a certain way of thinking, tend to linger long after the desired effect took place and beyond the point where a person should have normally be able to shake them off.

Bradford & Village Idiot, I remember a DO named George Cook. I think he could speak modern Greek; might have been from Greece, but didn't have an accent or anything that would make that obvious.
We had a George Cook as CO and his wife was named Joan. Very pompous and loved being the star of the show as did his wife.
He was the one who after the meeting, scolded my Mom and some of the older Sisters who had arranged a 50's party for us teens. We rarely ever got to do anything but this time we dressed up in 1950's clothes ( greasers, cheerleaders, Bobby soxers, Lettermen) and we did 50's dances. I kid you not, He actually said that instead of emulating the world, we should have dressed as the Pioneers and Missionaries of the day and listened to Kingdom Melodies of that era. He claimed that the dances weren't fitting for young ministers of Jehovah and said such activities would distract us young ones from the urgency of the times. We couldn't believe it !
This guy used to wear brightly colored 3 piece suits during his visits and his wife (Joan) used to wear Women's Fedora style hats with big Pheasant feathers that would practically be in the faces of the people sitting behind her during the meeting. She had long red fingernails which were a distraction to the householders at the door as she turned the pages of the Bible or the Literature. She also had a rather big caboose and was often squeezed into suits with straight skirts that she'd long since grown out of. My Mother (bless her) mentioned this to "Brother"Cook after he finished berating she and the other sisters about the 50's party.
My Mother was tall blonde and very elegant. She had a European accent. ( think of a blond Audry Hepburn) She was very articulate, quick witted and clever. Although she was respectful, she'd easily put any brother in his place if he took the headship thing too far with her which happened from time to time because my Dad was not a JW and the brothers viewed her as a single woman or widow.
In this instance, she said to Brother Cook "If it's distractions and what's befitting of a minister you're worried about, I suggest you take a look at your wife's tight skirts, large feathered hats and blood red fingernails and ask yourself If she portrays herself as a Minister or even the wife of a Minister when she's at the doors. For that matter, what must people around here think when you show up to their modest homes wearing a nearly pink suit. (it was salmon colored actually but some would call it pink). His face was priceless...he had nothing to say because it was all true and he was totally out of line and he knew it.
We all just walked away rolling our eyes thinking what an ass he was and cheering inside for what my Mom said.
This incident and many others like it, is why it was particularly galling for me to see the videos of the line dancing and Motown dance lessons taking place in the Halls last year during the International Assemblies.

You could work at a Food Bank and be a "Pioneer" without ever so much as opening a Bible or knocking on a door.
(sigh) The light just keeps on getting brighter and the new refinements are a refreshment to the soul.

JWs and Education
by cognac inmy parents were always of the belief that, "the end is right around the corner".. i was a zealous kid, with a learning disorder, so my parents never gave me a hard time or pushed me in regards to my education.. this not only hurt me, but, pissed me off insanely.
fast forward to me having my own kid.
ava is not doing well in school.

Oh....she's only six, I can't imagine how behind she could be, they are only getting started at that age.
The early hours do seem a bit excessive, you don't want to turn her against learning.
Kids need their sleep to do well at school.
At the same time, you do hear about the rigorous schedules of Chinese kids and what they're able to accomplish.
I'd examine my motives to see if I was on the right track with her.
Is she really behind or are you afraid that she's behind?
Was she concerned or did she ask for help?
Could you be overdoing it because of your JW experience with education?
Are her accomplishments directly tied to your feelings of worth as a parent?
You can teach kids casually in non structured sessions and include the 3 year old. Teaching someone else is a good way to reaffirm what you know yourself. You could have the 6 year old teach the three year old what she knows and listen in.
I'd definitely get some professional advice and do some research. It would be easy for a well meaning parent to go overboard.

Often, part of the Conditions of a City or County Building Permit is that a Performance Surety Agreement be signed and a Surety Bond, Cash Deposit or an Assignment of Funds in a Bank, to be set aside for use if the permit holder fails to complete the project.
My first thought is that their Performance Surety may have been in the form of Cash or an Assignment of Funds in which case, they have asked for it to be reduced because they've run short of funds. Sounds like the release of around 15 million dollars has been approved if that's the case.
If they had a Surety Bond and the amount was reduced, their Bond payment will be reduced accordingly which in turn will ease their financial strain somewhat but they won't get a lump sum of money returned to them, rather their cash outlay during the project will be less.
I can't imagine any of these things happening without some other form of collateral (perhaps and existing Brooklyn property) having been obtained first.

My mom thinks it's way to much and I'm bombarding my daughter with to much education.
We pretty much know where your Mom's head is when it comes to education.
What is your daughter saying ? Is she complaining more than you'd expect and does she seem overwhelmed? I'm not sure how old your daughter is but what you've described, certainly doesn't sound excessive, depending on her age. Maybe you could alternated days with the Tutor.

My Mother Died Two Weeks Ago
by Perry innone of my jehovah's witness relatives called to tell me or my family.
just found out this morning.

Sorry for your loss Perry. It's an empty old feeling that comes over you when you lose someone. Be assured that time will ease that emptiness but the one thing that helps in an immediate sense is to be around friends and family who share your grief and you didn't get that opportunity.
I'm hoping that rather than being a deliberate unkindness this was simply a case of individuals assuming that someone else had told you the bad news and not wanting to interfere or cause an awkward situation themselves, .
Either way, hang in there and be patient with yourself as you come to grips with this loss. I hope it helped to share this with us here who know what it is, to be left out.

First thoughts on "new" meeting...
by konceptual99 inhad a quick look at the workbook and flicked through the sample meeting video.. the increased use of video shows the trend for more centralised dissemination of "best practice" .
sure there isn't really a "school" any more and the format is a bit different but i think those that called it as the same old crap just in new package got it pretty much right.

No matter what new program the Society comes up with, it always involves their having to PRINT something. It's as if they can't help themselves.
True to form, this program is no different, right down to the repetitive questions with pre-packaged answers that leave no room for a genuine discussion to ensue or any unplanned dialogue to occur whatsoever.
